Kishmul's Galley

Kishmul was legendary pirate or "riever" who plied his trade in the 14th century on the north east coast of Scotland, among the Hebrides. In some stories he appears as a sort of sea-faring Robin Hood...stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. The Bennachie is a range of hills northeast of Aberdeen.

High on the Benachie
On that day of days, seaward I gaze
Watching Kishmul's Galley sailing

CHORUS
Ah-hee Ah-hoo-oh
Vall-eee Ah-hoo-oh

Bravely against wind and tide
They have brought us to 'neath Kishmul's walls
Kishmul's castle of ancient glory

CHORUS
Ah-hee Ah-hoo-oh
Vall-eee Ah-hoo-oh

Homeward she bravely battles,
'Gainst the hurtling waves,
Nor hoop nor yards,
Anchor, cable nor tackle has she.

CHORUS
Ah-hee Ah-hoo-oh
Vall-eee Ah-hoo-oh

Here's red wine, a toast to heroes
And harping too, and harping too
Watching Kishmul's galley sailing

CHORUS
Ah-hee Ah-hoo-oh
Vall-eee Ah-hoo-oh

Just a note...the Hebrides are off the WEST coast of scotland, not the east. I think that "high on the Benachie" is a wrong lyrics and is actually "high on the Barra Quay", as Kishmul's Castle and galley are on the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides off the West coast of Scotland. Hope this helps!

Actually the first line in the chorus is the old Gaelic war-cry - Achaidh..ACH, horo

Corrupted over on the other side of the pond to 'yee-HAH' :D

Your lyrics are wrong.

As Andrew saif, Kishmull's Castle (or Kisimul's Castle) lies in Castlebey, Barra, off the WEST coast of Scotland.

Yes, Bennacchie is in Aberdeenshire, but has nothing to do with this song. The Ben is more likely to be Bein a'Cheilleach.

I think Oisin is right in what he says too

And Kishmul is not a pirate, but the name of a medieval castle in Castlebay, Barra in the Hebrides. Kisimul Castle (Scottish Gaelic: Caisteal Chiosmuil) and also known as Kiessimul Castle, is a small medieval castle located on a small island off Castlebay, Barra, in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. It gets its name from the Gaelic cìosamul meaning "castle island". Stronghold of the great MacNeill Clan. Last of the Vikings and were known to be pirates that harassed English and government ships.
